You Are Not Crazy.. Therapy is Self Care!
This article is for every person of color (more than likely most young Black kids) who has second guessed their decision to get a therapist because of some outlandish narrative that having a therapist is crazy. Have you ever heard any of these phrases: “That aint depression that's the devil,” “What do you even have to be depressed about?” Friend, you are not crazy, you are perfectly sane! And, for the parents/family members who have said these things before please understand your words can be more hurtful than helpful. Wanting to have a conversation with a licensed professional that can help our loved ones with their issues, is let's say it together, NORMAL.
I would rather the people I love to choose that option instead of dumping on their best friend who could possibly tell their man and/or other friends, and next thing you know their business is a twitter thread #Fail (which only leads to more depression btw). So many young people (especially Black) around me and across the world are feeling sad this past year and taking their lives. How about, let's stop with this whole narrative that talking to yourself is crazy. HEY YOU! You deserve to be listened to and taken seriously about your feelings. And quite frankly, you don't have to always seek therapy when you are going through a rough time. Sometimes, challenge yourself and choose to speak with a licensed therapist when things are going good in your life. Because, there is always room for improvement!
For those looking for affordable therapy options, here are some additional resources you can look into other than paying full price. Start by calling your insurance provider to see what options are available to you. Additionally, you can ask your HR department to see if there are any employee assistance programs that can cover full payments or a specific amount of sessions. There are also apps like BetterHelp, podcasts like BlackGirlsHeal and BlackGuyTherapy. Even apps like Calm or following Mental Health hashtags/personas on Instagram can be therapeutic on your selfcare/healing journey too. Another tip, (last one I promise) when you choose a therapist be sure to evaluate the following types of therapy you may need. This will ensure your therapist aligns with your needs and you feel a sense of accomplishment at the end of your therapy sessions.

Personally, I chose a behavioral and cognitive therapist to understand my habits and how to change them moving forward. To put into today's terms: https://youtu.be/gH5240VZzMs. Because as a full time employee, business owner, mom, fiance, daughter, niece, cousin, and friend, I go through shit too! All in all, sis/bro/friend you are NOT CRAZY! Family and friends, let’s please teach the next generations of Black boys and girls that it is totally normal to seek professional help to understand and process your feelings in a healthy way. Therapy can help us all find positive ways to deal with difficult situations as they arise in current situations and for our future. Therapy is going to help you and those around you find inner peace. Let's save the next generation from dealing with the pain and sadness we struggled with. Let's make them stronger than us!
